Assessment of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologies in Coronary Arteriosclerosis

Strategic objectives

  • Study of the influence of local (e.g., atheroma plaque composition) and systemic (e.g., diabetes, cardiovascular risk factors, coronary syndrome, etc.) factors on vascular response and long-term outcome of coronary revascularisation.
  • Assessment of the immediate and long-term vascular response to interventions, taking into account the degree of vascular damage associated with the revascularisation technique (assessed with intracoronary imaging techniques).
  • Assessment of the integrity of the coronary microcirculation after the use of revascularisation technologies (distal protection, preserved endothelial function, etc).

Lines of research

  • Assessment of the applicability of coronary revascularisation techniques in specific patient subgroups and coronary lesions. Examples of such subgroups include diabetic or renal failure patients, acute coronary syndromes, stenosis with thrombus, chronic occlusions, saphenous vein grafts, diffuse coronary artery involvement, restenotic lesions, and calcified stenosis.
  • Comparison of mechanical behaviour between in vitro and in vivo intracoronary prostheses (elastic recoil after stent implantation, etc.).
  • Evaluation of biodegradable endocoronary prostheses.
  • Assessment of intracoronary drug delivery systems (antiproliferative or antithrombotic drug-eluting balloons, proteolytic agents in chronic occlusions, etc).
  • Assessment of the need and type of revascularisation with the support of intracoronary diagnostic techniques (pressure wire, ultrasound, or intravascular optical coherence tomography): selection of candidates for a revascularisation technique, optimisation of the results of the technique, etc.
