The diabetic foot is one of the most prevalent complications associated with diabetes mellitus, with approximately 15-25% of diabetics suffering from some type of ulceration during their lifetime, which in 80% of cases can lead to non-traumatic amputations in our hospital environment. In Europe, the cost of an amputation amounts to about €24,000 in direct costs alone, and an active foot ulcer for 12 months costs about €22,000 per patient.
On the other hand, the high rate of recurrence of lesions (around 60% in our country) and the high mortality associated with these patients make the diabetic foot a major community health problem, with health, social, and economic repercussions.
With the aim of caring for these patients and reducing the current rates of ulceration and reulceration associated with diabetes mellitus, and therefore the number of amputations related to diabetic foot, the Interdisciplinary Diabetic Foot Study Group of the Complutense University of Madrid is created, made up of university professors who, in their interdisciplinary nature, complement and increase the fruits of their research and innovation work in the Diabetic Foot Unit of the University Podiatry Clinic of the Complutense University of Madrid.
Its main institutional objective is the education, prevention and reintegration of patients suffering from diabetes mellitus, aimed at minimising as far as possible the effects of this disease on the health of their feet.
To this end, our group develops lines of research on the diabetic foot in the preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative framework, contributing to the excellence and development of care for patients with this problem.
