The Hospital Clínico San Carlos has traditionally been linked to medical education and clinical research through its linkage with the Complutense University of Madrid.
In 1992, the REUNI Project (Network of Research Units of the National Health System) was created with the aim of establishing a strategy for organising resources in the NHS. With the creation of the REUNI network, the Hospital Clínico San Carlos accredited its research areas at the highest level, consolidating an already existing Medicine and Experimental Surgery in 1993 and creating a Research Methodological Support Unit in 1994. The main objective of the Unit has been to facilitate research for the Hospital’s groups and from now on for the Health Research Institute (Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria) (IdISSC), providing technical support in statistics, research methodology and epidemiology, as well as training in this area for IdISSC staff. It has coordinated important national and international projects and has collaborated on numerous theses and publications.
