The research group “Clinical and Neurobiological Research in Psychiatry and Mental Health” (code NEC-1) belongs to the “Neuroscience” area of the Health Research Institute of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos in Madrid (IdISSC).
The group’s main objective is the study of prognostic factors of risk and protection in people with mental or neurodevelopmental disorders. The group has a multidisciplinary identity, with a translational vocation and a clinical orientation towards the identification of therapeutic targets and models of prevention and intervention in mental health.
The group’s activity is structured around four strategic axes, developed into 17 strategic lines:
Axis 1: Consolidation of Alliances and Research Networks:
– Line 1: More efficient integration of basic research conducted at UCM and Hospital Clínico San Carlos (HCSC) and clinical research conducted at HCSC through collaborative projects.
– Line 2: Collaboration with other research groups within IdISSC, especially in the “Neurosciences” area, through collaborative projects.
– Line 3: Collaboration with other research groups from national and international institutions through collaborative projects.
– Line 4: Creation of a dedicated group within CIBERSAM in alliance with the group “Advanced Research in Personality Disorders, Aggression, and Impulse Control” of IdISSC.
– Line 5: Continuation and promotion of translational and collaborative research.
– Line 6: Promotion and consolidation of a research culture among professionals dedicated to clinical activities.
Axis 2: Consolidation of Research Lines:
– Line 7: Consolidate the research line on identifying clinical and functional trajectories in children, adolescents, and adults attending mental health psychiatry and clinical psychology consultations.
– Line 8: Consolidate the research line on the identification and detection of factors (modifiable and non-modifiable) related to the prognosis of mental or neurodevelopmental disorders.
– Line 9: Consolidate research lines on inflammatory processes in the development and prognosis of mental and neurodevelopmental disorders.
– Line 10: Promote and consolidate research on risk and protective factors in the development and prognosis of schizophrenia and other psychoses, especially the first psychotic episode.
– Line 11: Consolidate the research line on the study of staging as a paradigm for the prevention, progression, and treatment of mental disorders.
– Line 12: Consolidate the group’s leadership of the national cohort of people with a first psychotic episode.
– Line 13: Increase scientific productivity.
– Line 14: Expand additional funding sources at the regional, national, and international levels.
Axis 3: Consolidation of the Teaching and Training Plan:
– Line 15: Consolidate the group’s training plan with a stable offering of courses and internships.
– Line 16: Promote the completion of doctoral theses.
Axis 4: Consolidation of Infrastructures:
– Line 17: Expansion of structures, equipment, and research spaces.

The strategic objectives of the group are:
The group’s priority research lines are:
1) Identification of clinical and functional trajectories in children and adolescents attending mental health psychiatry and clinical psychology consultations.
2) Identification of clinical and functional trajectories in adults attending mental health psychiatry and clinical psychology consultations.
3) Identification and detection of factors (modifiable and non-modifiable) related to the prognosis of mental and neurodevelopmental disorders.
4) The role of inflammatory processes in the development and prognosis of mental and neurodevelopmental disorders.
5) Identification of therapeutic targets related to inflammatory processes in individuals with mental or neurodevelopmental disorders.
6) Risk and protective factors for schizophrenia and other psychoses, particularly the first psychotic episode.
7) Study of staging as a paradigm for the prevention, progression, and treatment of mental disorders (especially in schizophrenia and depression).
8) National cohort of individuals with a first psychotic episode.
