The research group of the Ophthalmology Department of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos is a consolidated group at national and international level, which is part of the Thematic Network of Cooperative Research of the Instituto de Salud Carlos III OFTARED “Ocular pathology of ageing, visual quality, and quality of life” and of the consolidated multidisciplinary research group of the Complutense University of Madrid UCM-920415 “Design and evaluation of ophthalmic products and biomaterials. It works in close collaboration with the Instituto de Investigaciones Oftalmológicas “Ramón Castroviejo” (UCM).
The main lines of work are the development and evaluation of antiglaucomatous therapies, both medical and surgical, the evaluation of treatments for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), uveitis and dry eye syndrome (diagnosis, biomarkers, and new therapeutic approaches), the evaluation and development of diagnostic technology in ophthalmology, the genetics of visual diseases and the development of new ophthalmic formulations.

Dr. Julián García Feijoó
Licentiate degree in Medicine and Surgery from the Complutense University of Madrid (1992), Specialist Doctor in Ophthalmology via MIR from the Hospital Clínico San Carlos (1997) and Doctor in Medicine and Surgery from the Complutense University of Madrid (1998). Head of the Ophthalmology Department at the Hospital Clínico San Carlos (2010) and Full Professor of Ophthalmology at the Complutense University of Madrid (2007).
He has produced 496 publications, scientific and technical papers, and supervised 45 theses (7 international) in the areas of glaucoma and degenerative ocular pathologies. He has been a guest lecturer at more than 320 conferences and round tables, participating in 24 public projects (one funded by the EU) and more than 150 privately funded projects, acting as principal investigator in 101 of them.
In addition, he is Co-Chair of the EGS Surgical Special Interest group and a member of the ESCRS Glaucoma Committee, Secretary General of the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology, and editor of the journal Archivos de la Sociedad Española de Oftalmología.
