The Health Research Institute (Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria) of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos (IdISSC) is conceived as a functional structure of multidisciplinary and translational biomedical research of excellence, oriented to basic, clinical, epidemiological, and health services research, which has its headquarters in the complex that houses the Hospital Clínico San Carlos (C/ Profesor Martín Lagos s/n, 28040, Madrid).
The IdISSC is the result of the relationship between the Madrid Health Service (SERMAS) through the Hospital Clínico San Carlos (HCSC) and Primary Health Care Centres in the area of influence, the Complutense University of Madrid (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) (UCM), the Polytechnic University of Madrid (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid) (UPM), the Biomedical Research Foundation (Fundación para la Investigación Biomédica) of the HCSC (FIBHCSC), and the Department of Health (Directorate General for Research, Teaching and Documentation) of the Community of Madrid.
The IdISSC allows for the promotion of collaboration and cooperation between these research centres and groups, with the aim of fostering basic, clinical, technological, epidemiological and health services research; promoting and developing research programmes and projects or researcher training; ensuring the quality, ethics and deontological principles of research; fostering a culture of excellence in health research; and promoting the transfer of results to society, the health system, the scientific community and the economic system, encouraging innovation and the transfer of results.
The IdISSC is an accredited Institute since 23 March 2011 and its activity is annually supervised by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III.
